Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of optimizing a business’s digital presence so AI platforms like ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, and Microsoft Copilot recommend it accurately, favorably, and consistently when consumers ask questions it should be winning.

Over the past year, the question of AI has come up in almost every client conversation at BrainDo. These are businesses with strong SEO programs, and their SEO matters and carries forward.
But by its very nature, SEO was never designed to address how AI selects, extracts, and cites content when generating answers.
That gap is why I wrote this article, and why BrainDo has made GEO a core part of what we do.
For over 20 years, search worked one way: type a query, scan a list of results, click, decide on the website. The click drove the entire model.
That model is losing ground. Eight Oh Two Marketing’s 2026 AI + Search Behavior Study found that 37% of consumers now start searches with AI tools rather than a search engine, while Advanced Web Ranking’s Q4 2025 CTR data shows overall search demand declining 6.2% year over year.
Users now ask an AI assistant a question, and the AI synthesizes a direct answer from your site, competitors, review platforms, and editorial sources. The consumer may never visit a website at all.
The shift is difficult to measure because AI-driven traffic shows up differently in your analytics:
Google Analytics has added an AI assistant channel group, but it only catches visits with a recognized referrer. As such, a significant share of AI’s influence on your business remains invisible in your reporting.
AI answers draw from more than your own site. Large language models (LLMs) pull from editorial publications, review platforms, Reddit, competitor websites, and outdated articles to assemble what they say about you.
In his 2026 SEO Week presentation, James Cadwallader of Profound shared research estimating that 47% of what AI says about a brand is unsolicited editorial commentary, sourced from publications like Wirecutter and CNET, review platforms like Trustpilot and G2, and Reddit threads.
If you have not given AI clear, authoritative information about your business, it fills the gap with whatever it can find elsewhere.

Search engine optimization (SEO) earns your pages a position on a list of search results. Generative engine optimization (GEO) earns your business a place inside the AI-generated answer itself.

Google evaluates content trust through the Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trust framework (E-E-A-T), outlined in its Search Quality Rater Guidelines. Those qualities have always mattered for SEO, and they carry forward into GEO.
GEO addresses requirements that AI platforms have and search engines never did.
AI does not rank pages. It extracts facts, claims, and data points from across the web and assembles them into a single answer. For your content to be part of that answer, it needs clear, specific claims, answer-first structure, and headings that map to the questions your customers actually ask. AI needs to be able to pull information from your content with confidence.
Google’s crawlers (including Google-Extended, which feeds Gemini and AI Overviews) can render JavaScript. Most other AI crawlers cannot. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, and Copilot fetch raw HTML only. A site built on a JavaScript framework may perform well in Google’s AI features while remaining invisible everywhere else. Most businesses do not realize this gap exists until they audit it.
Google’s AI guide distinguishes between commodity content (generic advice anyone could write) and non-commodity content (insights grounded in specific experience). AI cites original work and passes over content that could have come from anywhere.
These distinctions between traditional SEO and modern GEO matter because AI now shapes purchasing decisions before consumers reach your website.
When someone asks an AI assistant for the “best running shoes for flat feet” or the “most reliable HVAC company near me,” AI returns specific brand recommendations. Brands that appear in those answers capture demand. Brands that don’t lose it to competitors they will never see in a dashboard.
This applies across every industry where consumers research before they buy.
Google’s Gemini now offers Personal Intelligence, using a consumer’s search history, email, and app activity to tailor responses to each individual. Two people asking the same question may receive different brand recommendations based on their personal context.
Your entity identity, content quality, and third-party validation need to be strong enough for AI to cite you across a wide range of personalized contexts, not just for a single generic query.
Google’s Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) takes this a step further. Developed in collaboration with Shopify, Target, Walmart, Visa, and Mastercard, UCP enables AI agents to complete purchases on a consumer’s behalf.
AI will not just recommend you or your competitor. It will buy from one of you, potentially without the consumer visiting either website.
Understanding why GEO matters is only part of the picture. There is also the question of what kind of AI presence you are building.
Visibility is mention volume: how often your brand appears. Credibility is citation trust: whether AI recommends you when a consumer is ready to act. A brand can appear in dozens of AI responses and still lose every high-intent prompt to a competitor AI trusts more.
BrainDo principal Brian Cosgrove framed this in his SEO Week 2026 presentation: stop trying to write the answer, and focus on being the answer. Think of this as analogous to impressions versus conversions in paid search: mentions create awareness, but recommendations drive revenue.
Google’s product decisions reflect this priority. In May 2026, Google expanded Preferred Sources into AI Overviews and AI Mode, letting users designate trusted websites highlighted inside AI answers, and introduced a “Highly Cited” badge for original reporting. Both features reward earned trust and original content. And Google has stated it is working toward using Preferred Sources as a ranking signal within AI features.
Building credibility in AI search does not require a full rebuild of your digital presence, but does mean you need to know where you stand today. These five steps create a practical starting point.
Open ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google. Ask the questions your customers ask. See whether your business appears, what AI says about you, and who it recommends instead. This costs nothing and reveals a lot.
If your site relies on JavaScript frameworks, most AI crawlers (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Copilot, etc.) cannot access it. Google’s crawlers can render JavaScript, but the others fetch raw HTML only.
An llms.txt file is a plain text file you place within the root directory of your website. It gives AI bots a structured overview of your business and can provide directives for agents. Google treats llms.txt like any other text file, but non-Google AI platforms actively use them for content discovery.
Using internal and external data sources, group your customer questions into topic clusters and test each cluster across AI platforms. The gaps between strong and zero visibility represent your highest-value opportunities.
