2019 is the final year of this current decade, and we wanted to share with you our top media moments of the year!
Fans of Disney and their productions were in for a treat in 2019, specifically on November 12th, when the subscription streaming service launched. A day after the launch, Disney+ already had a whopping 10 million accounts signed up. If we were to mention one notable item Disney+ released, it was the adorable introduction to Baby Yoda in the new series, The Mandalorian. In our eyes, Disney+ won streaming service of 2019.
Popeyes’ Chicken Sandwich
Did you ever think a fried chicken sandwich from a fast food chain would cause such media frenzy? If the answer is no, neither did we! Their marketing smarts really came to play when they launched their chicken sandwich in the summer of 2019. The viral sandwich release really got exposure once Twitter users, and brands started tweeting about it. If you know any marketers who doubt Twitter, mention the Popeyes’ Chicken sandwich!
Does hearing the words “Baby Shark” put a specific tune into your head? Baby Shark’s viral video and ever-so-catchy song dominated the internet in 2019 and homes worldwide, entertaining both children and adults. Fun fact about Baby Shark: It was released in 2012 but did not blow up throughout media until 2019. The viral hit has over 3.8 billion hits on YouTube.
TikTok has been around before 2019 but had a great year (with over a billion users), so we think it is worth a mention. If you are not familiar with TikTok, it is a social media network from China that allows the user to upload short videos, edit them, and share amongst their social network. Why is TikTok something marketers should consider? If your brand works with influencer marketing, and has clients with audiences between ages 16-24, this platform is certainly one not to forget about. Another thing worth mentioning about TikTok – there are no ads… yet. So, if you dip your marketing feet into the TikTok waters, prepare to get creative!
Old Town Road
2019 was Lil Nas X’s year in terms of music. The viral country song, Old Town Road, by the 20 year old rapper from Georgia, was not only the most searched song online (according to Google), but was the #1 song on the Billboard Hot 100 for a record breaking 19 weeks!
